A note from Matt, the owner of Victory Submission Strength in San Jose:

When I started jiu-jitsu in March 2016, I noticed a problem:

strength and conditioning in BJJ is decades behind the rest of the sports world.

Let me back up a little. I grew up playing hockey — an established, “big budget” sport. First, I played junior and college hockey. Then I coached for the San Jose Jr. Sharks and USA Hockey.

I saw multi-million dollar organizations (pro teams, USA Hockey) pour tons of money into keeping players strong, fast, and mobile so they can play at a high level for a long time. They invest in their players. And as part of that investment, they continually update their training methods and use the best practices known to sports science.

I didn’t know it at the time, but this was a luxury. I had access to state-of-the-art facilities and effective programming from qualified strength coaches. I took it for granted.

So you can imagine my surprise when I entered the jiu-jitsu world. It’s a young sport. No one was investing millions of dollars into jiu-jitsu athletes. There was no centralized body implementing best practices for strength and conditioning. It was (and still is)....the wild west.

Ask 10 black belt gym owners how to get stronger for BJJ, and you’ll probably get 10 different answers. Browse social media for ideas, and you’ll see gi pull-ups, burpees, triangle hip-ups, bodybuilding plans, and a slew of confident-sounding opinions.

But here’s the thing:

  1. BJJ coaches don’t typically know about best practices in strength and conditioning — and it’s not their job to know.

  2. BJJ strength and conditioning suggestions are often based on tradition or personal opinion — whether or not they’re actually effective.

And I could see it play out on the mat. I was watching my friends and training partners break their bodies down, suffer from pain and injury, and not actually get stronger…and it was hard to watch.

That’s when I was reminded of the age-old saying:

just because you’ve always done it this way doesn’t mean it’s the best way to do it.

I knew there was a better way. I could take the cutting-edge strength training principles I learned from the hockey world and bring them to jiu-jitsu athletes. I could help people learn how to treat themselves like athletes.

So I became a strength coach and opened Victory Submission Strength in San Jose. And I’m proud to say that with the help of our personalized programming, hundreds of Bay Area BJJ athletes report that they are able to:

  • Stay on the mats longer
